John 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Notice how parallel this verse is to Genesis 1:1,  last week's verse.  The chapter and verse are similar as well as the beginning words.  A story is told about a young slave girl in the 1800s who could not read, but she heard a preacher reciting this verse.  She was so impressed by the words of this verse that she went home and got someone who could read to point out the verse for her in a Bible.  According to Robert J. Morgan in 100 Bible Verses Everyone Should Know By Heart  , she "studied it until she could recognize the words one by one, and she searched through the Bible for others like them.  In this way, little by little, she learned to read."(49)
